What the job title doesn’t say…

As Managing Director of Further he’s a driver of innovation and change. With his co-founder Steve, he has taken the fledgling agency from start-up to turnover in excess of £2.5m in 2017.

As well as revenue, Zak has focused on building a positive culture at the agency – instilling the mantra ‘brave curious minds’ and supporting employee-led work environment improvements from flexible working hours to staff getting their birthday off. This is to ensure that the agency not only produces great work but that Further finds and retains talented teams of brave and curious individuals to do it.

We ask Zak to explain a bit about his passions – what drives him. We both acknowledge the difficulty of not sounding crass or trite when answering this, before he says:

“When all is said and done: yes I want to make money, and yes I want to enjoy my work and the time I spend working with the people who are employed at Further. But ultimately, I want to be proud of what I’ve helped create, proud of being regarded as one of the best agencies, and proud to have been a positive influence on someone’s career. I know, ‘pride comes before a fall’,” he laughs, “but genuinely, pride drives me. I want to look back and say, ‘I helped build that AWESOME company’.”

Zak is as focused on the world of the office as he is the outside world: creating an open, positive and productive environment for the team to work in. It is no accident that the culture and subsequent atmosphere at Further HQ is one of determination, encouragement, empowerment, flexibility and respect.

“This is a tough industry to survive in. You need to be very adaptable and that can be a challenge at times, but these values make us able to adapt and grow. Playing it safe is not a good approach in this competitive landscape.

Zak’s desire to push the agency forwards comes from his character as a change-agent and an innovator.

“A 360-degree assessment of me once said that I ‘like to shake things up’, sometimes ‘just for the hell of it’. I do. I also like to rattle down mountains at excessive speed [on a bicycle], because it makes me feel alive. In business, I like to push innovation, challenge people and drive new things, not just because it’s ‘a risk’ or ‘a thrill’, but because it’s what stimulates others and what will keep the business alive and thriving.”
